INTRODUCTION Welcome! Your name has been placed on a mailing list of persons interested in academic software engineering education. This is the first mailing. 2. A BIT OF HISTORY At the 5th Annual SEI Conference on Software Engineering Education held this past October in Pittsburgh, participants met in a birds-of-a-feather session titled "The Community of Academic Software Engineering Programs: Building an Organization." The purpose of the session was to discuss the feasibility of beginning to organize academic institutions engaged in software engineering education, and to begin plans for the startup of such activities. The session produced strong sentiment for building an organization and fostering a forum for communication. In order to initiate this forum and to continue the discussion, the participants favored an electronic forum. It was felt that no electronic forum currently existed that coincided with the interests of this group (for example, electronic newsgroups comp.edu and comp.software-eng). Thus an ad hoc organizing committee was formed to prototype a mailing list, with the conference participants forming the initial list of subscribers. 3. PURPOSE The purpose of the mailing list is to provide a forum for communication among academic educators in software engineering. Topics to be discussed include, but are not necessarily restricted to: * Graduate software engineering programs: descriptions of innovative programs, problems with programs, interaction with industry, administration of programs, specific software engineering courses. * Undergraduate software engineering programs: same as above (although no such programs currently exist). * Concentrations in software engineering within existing graduate or undergraduate programs in other disciplines. * Exchange of educational materials: Course syllabi, exercises, modules, software, text book reviews, etc. * Teaching problems and tips. * Scholarship, grants. * Educators' training and recruitment. * Career opportunities for teachers and students. * Political issues, such as the acceptance among colleagues of software engineering as a legitimate academic discipline. * Organizational issues: Ideas for additional forums such as workshops or a newsletter, organizing as a professional society. * Lastly, this forum itself. Your input is requested on how we can improve the mailing list. 4. SUBMISSIONS In order to submit an article, just mail it to the managing editor Pen-Nan Lee at the following e-mail address ("FASE" stands for "Forum for Academic Software Engineering"): fase@cs.uh.edu To add, delete, or change a subscription, send a message to the above e-mail address. Correspondence about the mailing list that you do not wish to be posted in a mailing can be sent to one of the committee members (their addresses appear at the end of this mailing). Submissions will be compiled into a digest with a table of contents and distributed when enough submissions are collected to warrant a distribution, but in no case less often than approximately monthly. All submissions will be distributed as received, with the following exceptions: a) Mail headers will be pruned to contain the poster's email address and name. b) Format, but not contents, may be edited. c) If a submission is extremely long (say, including a long program listing or document), the managing editor may ask the submitter to make it available from his or her machine. The managing editor should work with the person to that regard. (The possibility of maintaining an archive site is an issue that we will address.) d) Submissions that are blatantly offensive to individuals, in extremely bad taste, or libelous, may be postponed by the decision of the Organizing Committee. The committee should discuss that matter with the submitter. We do not intend to be like a moderated newsgroup, but encourage free exchange of ideas (and even flames) and intend to exercise this option only in extreme cases. 5. CONCLUSION We encourge and hope to have your active participation. Please encourage your colleagues to subscribe. As with computer science a generation ago, we are witnessing the birth and rapid maturation of an exciting discipline. We hope that this forum will be an important part of its development.
