Leonard L. Tripp, who led the creation and implementation of the new Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) program of the IEEE Computer Society (see January 2002 and other issues of FASE), has an article entitled "Benefits of Certification" on pp. 31-33. Tripp states that "Certification will raise the benchmark for individual performance in achieving software quality and productivity." An opposing view is found in "Certification Will Do More Harm Than Good" by Adam Kolawa, CEO and President of Parasoft, a company which is among the leaders in software test tools, in the same issue on pages 34-35. Kolawa states that "Certification is an unnecessary proof have not forgotten the fundamentals they learned in an accredited computer science program." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calls for Participation ###################################################################### From: Hossein Saiedian CALL FOR PAPERS Software Engineering Education and Training International Conference on Software Engineering 2003 May 3-10, 2003 Portland, Oregon, USA International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) is the premier software engineering conference. It provides a forum for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent advances, trends, and concerns. For the 2003 conference, ICSE follows a tradition of offering a special track on Software Engineering Education and Training. Goal. Proper software engineering education and training can significantly improve the current state of software development and help eliminate some of the traditional problems associated with industrial practices. This track provides an international forum for discussing topics related to software engineering education and training matters, such as curriculum development, methods of course delivery, innovative approaches, training programs, collaborative projects with industry, SWEBOK topics, and new software engineering programs (including PhD programs). Scope. The scope of the track includes all software engineering education and training matters, such as curriculum, methods of course delivery, innovative approaches, training programs, SWEBOK topics, and new software engineering programs. Papers should focus on ensuring that the results they present can be picked up and used by others. Authors should also be aware of the international remit of ICSE. How to Submit. Submit your paper in Adobe PDF (see instructions for submitting PDF files) via electronic submission. Your paper must conform to the proceedings publication format and should not exceed six pages, including all text, references, appendices, and figures. Additional and updated details are available at: http://www.cs.orst.edu/icse2003 Submission Due Dates * Submission Date: October 4, 2002 * Evaluation Notification: December 2, 2002 * Camera-ready Copy: TBA Review Process. The Software Engineering Education Organizing Committee will review each contribution and will select quality contributions. Submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of originality, importance of contribution, soundness, evaluation, quality of presentation, (and comparison to related work, when appropriate). Because there is no revision cycle, the content and presentation of submitted papers must be essentially acceptable as received. Papers submitted for consideration should not have been published elsewhere and should not be under review or submitted for review during the duration of consideration. Papers violating this restriction will be rejected. All accepted contributions will be published in the conference proceedings and must conform to the ICSE proceedings publication format. Journal Publication. The best papers of this track will be selected for a special issue of the Journal of Systems and Software (December 2003). Authors of the selected papers will be notified accordingly to expand their papers for journal publication. Organizing Committee H. Saiedian, Co-Chair (University of Kansas, USA) B. The Workshop is sponsored by UPA (Usability Professional Association). Purpose of Workshop: This workshop is an open forum for the discussion of the usability topics that should be taught to software engineers, the people who make most of the user interface design decisions that affect usability. We will also discuss the design, implementation and validation of the learning resources to effectively teach such topics. A sub-goal of this workshop is to explore educational avenues for integrating user-centered design in software engineering, computer and information science education. Full information on the Workshop and how you can get involved are available on the Workshop Web Site: http://hci.cs.concordia.ca/www/wcc02/ You can submit your position papers to any of the e-mail addresses given in the Cc of this message. Hope to see you in Montreal! Ahmed Seffah, Jan Gulliksen, and Paula Kotze ###################################################################### From: John D. McGregor via Nancy Mead Call for Participation Educator's Workshop Software Product Lines Conference (SPLC2) Research in software product line practice and industry use of those ideas have advanced to a point that product line topics are being introduced into a number of university curricula. The spreading use of software product line practices in industry is also resulting in an increase in industrial training courses. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum in which both academic and industrial educators can exchange ideas. The topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to: * the place in the graduate and undergraduate curriculum for product line topics, * what the appropriate topics are, * what resources, case studies and artifacts, are available to support instruction, and * techniques that have succeeded and those that have failed. We invite you to participate in the first educator's workshop devoted to software product lines. For complete information check out our web page at: http://www.cs.clemson.edu/~johnmc/splc2.htm (We expect to extend the deadline for position statements.)
