Presentations by experienced users, leading consultants, developers and researchers describe the utility and directions of techniques, approaches, products, and prototypes. It is a meeting place for key people on all aspects of reengineering: -- reengineering of business processes, -- IT transformation to better support the enterprise, -- reengineering of software, systems, and data, -- reverse engineering technology. REF's objective is to form a broad perspective snapshot of the present state of the field. A major focus of the Forum is to allow ample opportunity for one-on-one and group discussion among presenters and attendees. Interaction is paramount. The Forum is held as much to be a meeting place for the speakers to compare notes on the future of the field as it is for attendees to learn more about the state-of-the-art and new developments. This year's forum will be the first major conference at which the business process reengineering community and the software reengineering community will meet together to discuss the interaction between these driving industrial forces. Also this year, the Reengineering Forum will join with the 11th International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM-94) to form "Reengineering and Maintenance Week", including jointly sponsored tutorials, a single tools fair spanning both conferences, and a joint plenary session. This brings together industry and research communities with similar interests throughout the week of September 19-23. The Reengineering Forum uses a "rolling admissions" policy for accepting presentations. Some speaker slots are kept open until days before the meeting to enable previously undiscovered work and new results/developments to be presented. This yields a high-quality, timely, and very current program for Forum attendees. Specific date/time for each speaker is assigned days before the Forum, maximizing speaker participation in the entire meeting and retaining flexibility for the best possible program. This is a working meeting for the advancement of the field -- not a trade show. Speakers are encouraged to be full participants in the Forum, and not just dropping in to give a presentation. Sales pitches are specifically discouraged, but meaningful technical presentations of products and services are welcome. Presentations will be added and revised throughout the Summer 1994 to achieve the highest quality program, spanning the breadth of the reengineering field. Therefore, the listings below are subject to change. The Forum will have up to four (4) presentation sessions in parallel. Proposals for presentations should be directed to the Forum's general chair: Elliot Chikofsky, DMR Group Inc. 404 Wyman Street, Suite 450, Waltham, MA 02154 USA +1-617-487-9026; fax +1-617-487-5752; email e.chikofsky@computer.org ------- Tutorials ------- Full-Day Tutorials - Monday, September 19 (see descriptions below) Process Reengineering for BPR, CPI & TQM with Software Maintenance Examples Marc I. Some additional tutorial options are available for ICSM attendees while REF is in progress. PROCESS REENGINEERING FOR BPR, CPI & TQM - WITH S/W MAINTENANCE EXAMPLES Marc I. Kellner - Software Engineering Institute, USA Participants will gain familiarity with the emerging areas of business process reengineering (BPR), continuous process improvement (CPI), and total quality management (TQM) -- and the need for effective techniques to truly (re)engineer processes to support organizational goals. The needed techniques are encompassed by advances in process modeling and definition, which are quite broadly applicable to a wide variety of organizational processes. These techniques will be illustrated with examples drawn from large-scale, real-world, software maintenance processes, and will highlight the practical applications of this work. Practitioners will be prepared to evaluate the potential value of applying these new techniques for BPR, CPI, and TQM in their organizations, and will obtain a foundation of concrete knowledge and guidance that can be applied in practice immediately. Researchers will gain an understanding of the relevant research needs and issues, will gain exposure to the latest progress in research and advanced applications, and will be prepared to evaluate potential synergies between their work and BPR, CPI, process modeling and definition. Dr. Marc Kellner is a senior scientist at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He has pioneered much of the work on software process modeling and definition conducted at the SEI. He has published over twenty papers on software process issues, including the first major overview of the field of process modeling. He has taught previous tutorials on process modeling and definition to over 600 software professionals. His work has long been motivated by -- and designed to support -- CPI, TQM, and BPR. -------- SOFTWARE REENGINEERING Robert S. Arnold - Software Evolution Technology, USA Software reengineering has become an essential approach for supporting change. Software reengineering can improve existing software and information assets to accomplish business reengineering objectives, decrease maintenance costs, prepare existing software for migration to another platform, and help extract software and information assets for reuse. It can also be used for restructuring systems, redocumenting systems, understanding systems, recovering software design information, and providing new views of software and its documentation. This seminar will discuss the current state of reengineering technology (including restructuring, reverse engineering, and design recovery), processes for accomplishing reengineering activities such as migration and redocumenting hard-to-understand code, CASE tools for reengineering, and how to apply reengineering technology to solve real-life software reengineering problems. Dr. Robert Arnold is the author of Software Reengineering (IEEE Computer Society, 1993) and the Tutorial on Software Restructuring (1986). He has trained corporate internal consultants to help companies develop self- supporting reengineering and reverse engineering expertise. -------- THE TECHNOLOGY OF MAINTENANCE AND REENGINEERING Nicholas Zvegintzov - Software Maintenance News, USA This tutorial is a comprehensive review of the currently available technology for maintaining, enhancing, supporting, documenting, reengineering, and managing existing software. The tutorial: - briefs participants on the software and services available to software teams responsible for installed software; - equips participants to evaluate and select current technology to extend, analyze, monitor, test, control, and integrate installed software, and to support users; - explains the technology for the analysis of control, data, and object flow, for testing, documentation, software configuration management, integration, reengineering, and user support; - relates tool support to analytic processes for comprehending, modifying, and controlling installed software. Participants will receive the Software Management Technology Reference Guide, analyzing and describing 700+ software products or services from 500+ vendors on 60+ platforms, plus case studies, references and background. Nicholas Zvegintzov is a writer, teacher, and consultant specializing in existing software. He is Editor-in-Chief of Software Maintenance News and the technical editor of the Software Management Technology Reference Guide. He consults extensively with software engineers, project leaders, and managers on the effective use of software technology in managing installed software. ========================================================================== FORUM VENUE: VICTORIA The Reengineering Forum and ICSM will be held downtown in the Victoria Conference Centre.
