The underlying database is a huge collection of about 240,000 Computer Science citations, all in bibTeX format, put together by Alf-Christian Achilles. (see http://www.ira.uka.de/ftp/ira/bibliography/index.html) The server supports Boolean search and approximate matching (i.e., allowing misspellings) among other things. For example, you can find articles dealing with 'group' and 'brainstorming', or articles about the 'Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse' games (in which case allowing a misspelling or two may be a good idea). The output of a query includes the complete citations (sometimes with abstracts) that matched the query plus pointers to descriptions of the matched bibliographies. You can find the server at http://glimpse.cs.arizona.edu:1994/bib/ Currently there are bibliographies in 13 areas (each area contains many different bibliographies): Artificial Intelligence Programming Languages and Compiling Technologies Databases Distributed Systems Computer Graphics Mathematics Miscellaneous Topics Neural Networks Object-Oriented Programming Systems Parallel Processing Technical Reports Theory/Foundations of Computer Science Typesetting ---------- Glimpse (which stands for GLobal IMPlicit SEarch) is an indexing and query system that allows you to search through all your files very quickly. Glimpseindex, which you run by saying glimpseindex ~ (or specifying any other directory) builds a very small index (2-5% of the text). With it, glimpse can search through all your files much the same way as agrep (or any other grep), except that you don't have to specify file names. For example, glimpse -1 unbelievable will find all occurrences (in all your files!) of "unbelievable" allowing one spelling error; glimpse -F mail arizona will find all occurrences of "arizona" in all files with "mail" somewhere in their name; glimpse -F '\.c$' variablename will find all "variablename"'s in all your .c files (even if you have 1000's of .c files). HTML version of glimpse manual pages is in http://glimpse.cs.arizona.edu:1994/glimpse.html Also, see glimpse developers home page in http://glimpse.cs.arizona.edu:1994/ The complete source code for glimpse and glimpseindex, as well as manual pages and other stuff can be obtained from ftp://cs.arizona.edu/glimpse/glimpse.1.1.src.tar.Z Sparc executables are in ftp://cs.arizona.edu/glimpse/glimpse.1.1.bin.sparc.tar.Z (for Sun OS) ftp://cs.arizona.edu/glimpse/glimpse.1.1.bin.solaris.tar.Z (for Solaris) Ultrix/MIPS executables are in ftp://cs.arizona.edu/glimpse/glimpse.1.1.bin.mips.tar.Z OSF1/Alpha executables are in ftp://cs.arizona.edu/glimpse/glimpse.1.1.bin.alpha.tar.Z Linux executables are in ftp://cs.arizona.edu/glimpse/glimpse.1.0.bin.linux.tar.Z (We expect to port glimpse to other platforms soon.
