The market is flooded with software/hardware products. While the development of ANN theory and software design are in progress, there are some other new research areas which grew up based on the realization that effectiveness of ANN based models and systems can be improved by integrating its merits with those of other emerging theories/ technologies such as Fuzzy Logic and Genetic algorithms. The purpose of this theme issue is to increase the awareness of computing community about the applicability and cost-effectiveness of neural computing, and to demonstrate the current state-of-the- art in the theory and practice of neural modeling in solving real life problems from various application domains as well as to generate new ideas. The Chairperson is expected to lead the department in the continued development of high quality undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science. Successful candidates must have formal training in both engineering and computer science and have sufficient scholarly accomplishments, including the direction of doctoral students in a Ph.D. program, to justify appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure. Successful candidates must also have commitment and a vision for computer science education and curricula, scholarly publication, funded research and public service. Candidates must also have demonstrated leadership and managerial skills, excellent communication and teaching abilities, strong motivational skills, and a commitment to alumni and corporate development. The Computer Science Department is one of 8 departments in the College of Engineering and offers degrees at the bachelor, masters and doctoral levels. At present, there are 9 full-time and 3 part-time faculty, 3 TA+s and 498 students. A 10th full-time faculty position has been approved and a search is currently underway. This position, beginning in August 1995, carries a teaching load of no more than five courses per year and the appointment may be renewable. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in computer science and demonstrated excellence in teaching. Allegheny College is a selective, private, liberal arts college located in beautiful northwestern Pennsylvania adjacent to numerous lakes and parks with a climate conducive to both winter and summer recreation. The college serves approximately 1750, mostly residential, students with about 160 FTE faculty. The Department was established in 1969 and began offering a major program in 1979, making it one of the oldest departments in the country. It currently has four faculty members, and graduates between 5 and 15 computer science majors per year. The computer science curriculum consists of 3 basic courses, including discrete mathematics, a 4 course core covering the essence of the discipline and providing the foundation for elective advanced and applications courses, and a capstone senior thesis. Each student must enroll in a Junior Seminar covering topics and research methods in computer science and then successfully complete a senior thesis under the guidance of a faculty member. Faculty research interests are currently in the areas of artificial intelligence, automated reasoning, operating systems, programming environments, incremental compilation, parallel computation, human and computer interfacing, theory of computation, and economics of computing. Department facilities include teaching and research laboratories equipped with a department network of workstations, a network of transputers and connection to the College's campus-wide network of workstations. Faculty offices include workstations connected to the Department and College networks and the Internet. The candidate's background and interests may vary but must be compatible with the needs of the Department and teaching in a liberal arts environment.
