The current issue of the journal, Spetember 1995, therefore, includes a listing of over 600 titles, plus the ``5 must-reads'' and the all time top-10 classics. The listing is grouped by programming languages, networking, software engineering, miscellanuous, etc. A few videotapes and a CD-ROM are also listed. No reviews are given, but justifications for the 5 ``must-reads'' are stated. Regards, Hossein A------------------------------------------------------- From: Subject: Educating "Heroes" James Bachs letter in May's IEEE Software presents a difficult challenge for software engineering educators: training heroes. Responding to letters critical of his article ("Enough about process: What We Need Are Heroes,", IEEE Computer, March 1995), James Bach explains that "By heroism, I mean the combination of talent, motivation, discipline, ingenuity and judgement that allows an engineer to effectively take initiative to solve ambiguous problems." He believes that heroism of this healthy sort is necessary in every engineering field, in law and medicine---in any field in which "there are no pat formulas available to solve most of the problems encountered." Finally, the challenge: "I'm talking about behavior that is hard to teach and even harder to study. Nevertheless, it is the secret to success in any and all engineering undertakings, and it's high time we directed our attention to it." I'd like to hear about successes in training "heroes". A------------------------------------------------------- From: lwerth@cs.utexas.edu (Laurie Werth) Subject: CS Bibliography home page We are happy to announce a new WWW page http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/%7Edmjones/hbp/ containing unified complete bibliographies for the following journals and conferences: * Information and Computation (with abstracts) * Journal of the ACM (with abstracts) * ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC) * IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS) * IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) Features of all the bibliographies include * keyword searches on authors, titles, and abstracts * links to author home pages * cross-references between articles that cite one another In addition, the I&C and JACM bibliographies include * abstracts of recent papers (available in HTML, LaTeX, DVI, or PostScript format) * up-to-date backlog information * hypertext lists of journal editors * Information for Authors and directions for electronic submission of manuscripts If you have published in any of these forums and have your own WWW page or similar resource (such as a public ftp directory or gopher document) where information about you or your research may be found, please let me know, and I'll add a link to it from our bibliographies. Also, if you have published in I&C or JACM and the abstract of your work is not currently on our page, it would be extremely helpful if you could take a few minutes to send the abstract to me. NOTE: I have support for JACM and I&C, but I can't indefinitely maintain the FOCS, STOC and LICS bibliographies myself. So we are looking for VOLUNTEERS to keep these up to date and on the Web. Alternatively, volunteering a few hours of time simply to add further bibliographies and abstracts would directly improve the current database. If you think you might be interested in doing this, please send me email for more information. I would also be delighted to hear from anyone who is maintaining similar bibliographic resources and would like to discuss the possibilities of cross-linking them into this system. Comments, suggestions, and chocolate are always welcome. Cheers, David M. A------------------------------------------------------- From: Keith Pierce Subject: Here and There >From recent issues of EDUPAGE U.S.-JAPAN "SOFTWARE QUALITY ASSURANCE" DISPUTE Because of strong objections from IBM, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard and other American companies, a Japanese nongovernmental accreditation board that wants software sold in Japan to be reviewed by independent quality assurance auditors now says it will delay launching the accreditation program until the disagreements are resolved (in talks set for October). (New York Times, 11 Aug 95 C2) PLANNING FOR FAILURE Author Peter G. Neumann advocates courses on risk analysis and the social consequences of technology be included as part of every engineering degree. Neumann runs the Internet Risks Forum (risks@csl.sri.com) and has published a book called "Computer-Related Risks" (Addison-Wesley, 1995), documenting the problems that can arise when computers, and the people who program them, goof up. (Technology Review, Aug/Sept 95 p85) EDUCOM VP URGES NEW PEDAGOGICAL MODEL Educom Vice President Mike Roberts told Jeff Ubois in an Internet World interview: "What we have to do is change the pedagogical model so it involves interactivity in the learning process, so there is at least as much activity by student as by faculty. Then we apply bandwidth to that model. It is both a threatening time and an exciting time: We finally have the tools and capacity to go back and look at these models. You won't get a person's attention by copying from a book to a chalkboard."
