Forum for Academic Software Engineering Volume 5, Number 24, Mon Oct 2 09:23:49 CDT 1995 Topics: Announcement: Proposed Changes to FASE Proposed NEW Statement of Purpose Survey A------------------------------------------------------- From: Keith Pierce Subject: Announcement: Proposed Changes to FASE Since its inception, the purpose of FASE has been to serve as a forum for exchange of information about software engineering education among all stakeholders: corporate, government, and academic. But it has tended to focus on academic education, leaving unrealized its potential to serve corporate and government educators and trainers. At a recent workshop on professional software engineering education led by Nancy Mead (SEI), participants identified a need to establish a newsletter similar to FASE but devoted to industry and government education. Kathy Beckman (Computer Data Systems, Inc., Rockville, Maryland, USA) volunteered to edit the newsletter and I agreed to help her and Nancy with their effort. Initial discussions focussed on creating a separate newsletter. But the nature of this profession leads to much overlap between academic and non-academic education: Industrial and government educators and trainers often have university connections and vice versa. We concluded that, instead of two independent newsletters, one combined newsletter might be more appropriate. Laurie Werth and Dave Eichmann, the other members of the FASE advisory committee, agreed, and so we propose an expanded purpose for FASE that includes the interests of corporate and government educators. We also propose to change the name of the newsletter to reflect the change. The remainder of this issue contains the proposed expanded statement of purpose and a request for feedback from you. Please complete and return the survey to me at kpierce@d.umn.edu by OCTOBER 15. We look forward to your responses. Assuming they're generally positive, we expect the first expanded issue to appear in early November.
