New Name! Thank you to all who responded to the survey. Your opinions have shaped the direction of this newsletter. This is the first issue of FASE under the new set of objectives and new name. We hope that this newsletter will be useful to all stakeholders in software engineering education and training. Let us know how we can serve you better. I hope that the new format for the table of contents helps you locate what is of interest to you. This issue includes three articles reflecting the expanded role of FASE: a program profile by our new corporate/government editor, Kathy Beckman; and an announcement of two SEI tech reports, one summarizing known university/industry collaborations and another describing guidelines for developing a training plan, from SEI's Maribeth Carpenter. We hope that this newsletter will play a role in supporting synergy among academic, corporate, and government software engineering professionals. Please help make this newsletter even more successful by contributing items of interest to software engineering educators and trainers. Send articles about corporate and government training to Kathy Beckman at sdmce@access.digex.net; I will continue to receive academic and all other categories of submissions (send to kpierce@d.umn.edu or fase-submit@d.umn.edu). A------------------------------------------------------- From: Maribeth B. Carpenter (mbc@sei.cmu.edu) Subject: Organizational Training Plans The SEI has released a new technical report entitled "Training Guidelines: Creating a Training Plan for a Software Organization" by Maribeth B. Carpenter and Harvey K. Hallman. The guidelines focus on issues to be addressed by the training program of a software organization comprised of multiple software projects. The document discusses why the SEI Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Training Program key process area resides at level 3 and provides appropriate cross references to the SEI People CMM. Using an ETVX model of the training process, the activity of creating a training plan is put in context. The document contains a suggested outline for an organizational training plan, with discussion of the content of each section. Several organizations have contributed artifacts and curricula, including Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, PRC Inc., Texas Instruments, and Motorola. Carpenter (mbc@sei.cmu.edu) Subject: Update: Directory of Industry and University Collaborations Version 3 of the "Directory of Industry and University Collaborations with a Focus on Software Engineering Education" was released in September, 1995. The directory describes collaborative efforts to promote software engineering education among businesses and universities in the United States and Canada. The groups vary in their maturity and the services they provide. The reader can use this directory to find collaborations that match their needs and are located within their geographic area. Currently described groups are: - Alliance for Higher Education - California State University, Long Beach Software Engineering Forum for Training (SEFT) - Computer Applications and Software Engineering (CASE) Center at Syracuse University - Consortium for Graduate Education in Software Engineering (ConGESE) - D.C. SPIN Training Group - Florida Atlantic University - Quebec Master's Program in Software Engineering - Research Institute for Computing and Information Systems (RICIS) - San Diego State University Center for Computer Technology - Software Industry Coalition - Software Productivity Centre - Software Quality Institute - Software Quality Research Laboratory (SQRL) - Software Technology Centre - The University of British Columbia Certificate in Software Engineering - The University of Southern California Center for Software Engineering I am seeking information about other collaborations for inclusion in 1996 versions. Typical examples are software (and other) engineering activities, office procedures, and banking systems. All these activities are characterized by the interaction among people and between people and computerized tools. This interaction defines a process, whose effectiveness is essential to ensure the quality of the delivered products and/or services. These business activities share some distinctive features: - Extensive use of automated systems to support and enable the work of human agents. - strong level of dependency among activities. - Communication among human agents. - High degree of evolution of the procedures to be executed. - Presence of significant exceptions and deviations. Information Technology has focused on supporting these activities, generating different research areas that can be collectively called Process Technology. In particular, three important research areas are addressing this topic, with different viewpoints and approaches: CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) WFMS (WorkFlow Management System) and PSEE (Process-centered Software Engineering Environment) This special issue focuses on methods and techniques to elicit, assess, describe, and support processes. For more information, please contact Bashar Nuseibeh at ban@doc.ic.ac.uk or see the journal's Web page (http://www-dse.doc.ic.ac.uk/~ban/ase.html). A------------------------------------------------------- From: johnson@uhics.ics.Hawaii.Edu Subject: Egret CSCW Platform Available We are pleased to announce the public release of Egret, a framework for construction of computer-supported cooperative work applications. Egret has been used since 1991 to explore a variety of research and education issues related to software engineering. Egret implements a multi-client, multi-server, multi-agent architecture. Egret clients and agents are implemented by a 15 KLOC extension to XEmacs, the X-window Emacs editor. Egret servers are implemented by a 15 KLOC system written in C++. The Egret distribution includes full sources and binaries for several Unix platforms, and over 300 pages of documentation. The distribution also includes several sample applications, including: * CSRS, a collaborative software review environment. * Shemacs, a drop-in Emacs extension providing concurrent real-time editing. * AEN, a collaborative hypertext authoring environment. * Flashmail, a real-time messaging system. Egret and its applications are available without charge. A------------------------------------------------------- From: Keith Pierce Subject: Professors Turn to the Web for Material Distribution From Edupage, 2 November 1995 Professors increasingly are bypassing the copy machine and posting course syllabi and other materials directly onto the Web for downloading by their students. This new strategy allows teachers to offer more current information and facilitates mid-course changes if necessary. Some report that their students spend more time surfing through the information, and point out that high-tech materials presentation ties right in with the expectations of the video generation. Still, many have voiced concern over potential copyright violations and worry that their online activities might get their schools in trouble. "Professors are probably one by one violating copyright laws," says Educom VP Carol Twigg, who predicts that these issues will be resolved before too long. "The next generation of faculty are going to do this naturally." (Chronicle of Higher Education 3 Nov 95 A27) A------------------------------------------------------- From: Keith Pierce Subject: The Future of the University From INFOSYS Volume 2, Number 35 Columbia University professor Eli Noam sees a reversal in the historic direction of information flow: "In the past, people came to the information, which was stored at the university. In the future, the information will come to the people, wherever they are. What then is the role of the university? Will it be more than a collection of remaining physical functions, such as the science laboratory and football team? Will the impact of electronics on the university be like that of printing on the medieval cathedral, ending its central role in information transfer? Have we reached the end of the line of a model that goes back to Ninevah, more than 2500 years ago? Can we self-reform the university, or must things get much worse first?" (Science 13 Oct 95 p247) A------------------------------------------------------- From: Judith Gersting Subject: Faculty Position -- University of Hawaii at Hilo The Computer Science Department at the University of Hawaii at Hilo invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning August, 1996. Preference will be given for candidates with specialization in software engineering, but all areas will be considered. For more information contact RECRUIT-L@UHUNIX.UHCC.HAWAII.EDU A------------------------------------------------------- From: Dechang Gu Subject: Faculty position: North Carolina A&T Applications are invited for faculty positions at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC, at all levels. Less senior candidates will be considered for visiting or tenure track appointments if senior personnel are not available. Specific areas of interest are in Database Management Systems, and applications of databases to object oriented analysis, design, and implementation. However, all areas of Computer Science will be considered, with preference given to applicants whose res earch record and interests will contribute to established strengths in object oriented software engineering and artificial intelligence.
