This month's column suggests checking out two Web home pages that are dedicated to the TRDEV-L newsgroup, an Internetwide discussion group focusing on training and development issues. The first is . According to the article, this site is a "great place to find links to many other training-related Web sites." The second is . This page was set up by the moderator of the TRDEV-L newsgroup, Dave Passmore of Penn State. This home page has a link to the Training and Development FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). A------------------------------------------------------- From: Nikos Papaspyrou Subject: CFP: 3rd Doctoral Consortium on Advanced IS Engineering May 20-21, 1996. Heraklion, Crete. Greece The Doctoral Consortium on Advanced Information Systems Engineering will be the 3rd to be organized as a Workshop in the CAiSE conference series. The two first days of the CAiSE*96 conference (May 20th and 21st) have been reserved for the consortium and the other workshops. The consortium is intended to bring together PhD students within the information systems engineering field and give them the opportunity to present their research, to discuss it with other doctoral students and to get feedback. During the Consortium, a panel consisting of at least two prominent professors in the field of Information Systems will actively participate and contribute to the discussions. The Doctoral Consortium should be in line with the CAiSE 96 themes. The general theme of CAiSE*96 is: "Software Engineering Challenges in Modern Information Systems". An indicative, but not restrictive, list of such information systems includes Open Client/Server-based IS, Digital Libraries, Interoperable IS, Global IS in the Internet, Multimedia IS, and Re-Architectured Legacy Systems. More specifically, relevant topics for CAiSE*96 include, but are not necessarily limited to the following: - CASE Studies and Experience Reports - IS Requirements Engineering - Information Modeling - IS Design Techniques: Object-Oriented, Formal, CASE-based - IS Implementation Techniques: Reuse-based Development, Database Programming Languages, Application - Generators, Object-Oriented - IS Strategy and Planning - Maintenance and Evolution of IS - Information Repositories - Business Process Re-engineering - Re-Engineering Legacy IS - Digital Libraries - Workflow Management - Reuse Environments/Classification - Reusability on the Internet - Distributed Web Applications - Information Superhighways - Novel IS Architectures: Distributed, Cooperative, Intelligent, Interoperable, Multimedia, Open, Client-Server To apply for participating at the consortium, you must provide 5 copies of an abstract of your doctoral work. The abstract should : 1. identify clearly the research question; 2. outline the hard problems in the field of research and the current solutions using up to 10 known references; 3. present the preliminary ideas and state clearly the proposed approach; 4. present the contributions of the applicant and the results of the work During the consortium, a general discussion on Ph.D. research will take place concerning its duration, its full or part-time basis, its financial support, ethics, etc. Submissions will be selected based on the topic, quality, and interest of the abstract. Admission is limited to 20 students. The abstract should not exceed four A4 pages in length including references (margins: 2 cm from all sides, single line spacing, Font: Times Roman, 10 pt). Electronic submissions are strongly encouraged (only Postscript or MS Word 2.0-7.0 format). IMPORTANT DATES Submission deadline : January 20, 1996 Notification of acceptance : February 20, 1996 EUROCONFERENCE SUPPORT The Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) programme of the European Community will provide financial support to selected young researchers and post-graduate students to enable them to attend CAiSE'96. Applications should be made to the Conference Organizers. Further information will be available at the consortium's WEB site. Conversely, methods used in the field of human-computer interaction have often focussed on the techniques of user-centred design to the exclusion of other techniques from software engineering which identify requirements relating, for example, to safety, security, performance and commercial viability. In recent years, some commonality between the approaches used in different areas has, however, begun to emerge. In this meeting, we hope to identify an agenda for the future integration of complementary methods and techniques for requirements engineering, which draw on traditions in both software engineering and human-computer interaction. The objectives of this workshop are to allow for software engineering researchers to meet and discuss current and future software engineering research directions and initiatives. In particular we are especially interested in receiving submissions that address the following question. What are you doing now, where is it going, and how is it relevant to software engineering in the future? Submissions from researchers who are involved in ongoing projects and who may have some initial, or partial, results will also be of interest to participants at this workshop. City University of Hong Kong is easily accessible from all parts of Hong Kong as it is very close to the Kowloon Tong MTR station and interchange with the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The workshop has been organized to fit in with ICSE-18 so that participants can attend the workshop in Hong Kong on their way to ICSE-18 in Berlin. The programme committee have organized hotel accommodation at one of the downtown hotels in the main Kowloon tourist area.
