IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer
Communications
TCCC
Welcome from the
Chair – Joe Bumblis
This is the first newsletter published by a TCCC chair in the many years the TCCC has been in existence. My hope is to have quarterly newsletters available for the TCCC membership to keep you abreast of TCCC activities. The Executive Committee (ExCom) has been working very hard to bring you value-added activities making your membership in the TCCC a valuable and rewarding experience.
For example, we are about to launch a publications area on the TCCC web page (http://tab.computer.org) where members can read about TCCC activities and the many conferences and workshops sponsored by the TCCC. Our longer-term hope is to offer articles and papers in PDF format you will be able to download and review. Our first step is to offer conference reports; the IEEE Computer Society international conference on Local Computer Networks (http://www.ieeelcn.org) will be the first conference report available on the TCCC web page within the next couple of months. Conferences like PerCom ( http://www.percom.org/ ) and WoWMoM (http://www.perlab.it/wowmom2005/ ) will be available later in 2005.
I invite all of you to visit the TCCC web page and review the information currently there. As we progress through 2005, many additional offerings will appear for your educational and enlightenment activities.
Meet the TCCC
Executive Committee (ExCom)
During my first two years as Chair of the TCCC, my efforts were focused on major rebuilding of the TCCC. Since that time I have assembled a very impressive team of folks to comprise the Executive Committee. Today the TCCC ExCom currently has nine members. They include:
Joe Bumblis –
Chair, TCCC (and acting Finance Chair). Joe is currently an IT Project Manager/System
Architect at UDLP in
Sajal K. Das -
Vice-Chair, TCCC. Sajal
is currently Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the
Gary Kessler -
Security Technology Chair (and acting Web Master).
Archan Misra - Un-tethered Network Technology
Chair. Archan is currently a Research Staff
Member with the Pervasive Security and Networking Department at the IBM TJ
Watson Research Center,
Ellis Nolley - Strategic Planning Chair. Ellis currently heads a strategic planning firm (Strategic Growth) to position technology businesses to target markets. You can review Ellis’ bio at: http://tab.computer.org/tccc/bio/Ellis_Bio.htm
ExCom Members-at-Large:
Douglas Comer –
Sanjay Jha – Sanjay is currently an Associate Professor and
the head of the Network Group at the
Charles Perkins –
Charles is currently a Research Fellow at Nokia Corporation, in the
Howard Salwen – Howard founded Proteon, Inc. in 1972 and was Chairman of its Board of Directors until it merged with Netrix Corp. in December of 1999. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Turbine Entertainment Software Corporation. You can review Howard’s bio at: http://tab.computer.org/tccc/bio/Howard.htm
Several ExCom positions remain unfilled; they include:
· A permanent Finance Chair,
· Tethered Network Technology Chair, and a
· Protocol Technology Chair
I encourage all of you to consider joining the TCCC ExCom. If you have an interest in filling any of these Chair positions, please send your area of interest and a resume/c.v. to me at j.bumblis@ieee.org

ExCom Meeting Minutes
The TCCC ExCom held four meetings in 2004. You can review the minutes of these meetings at http://tab.computer.org/tccc
TCCC-sponsored
Conference and Workshop Reports
As mentioned above, the ExCom is working very hard to publish conference reports. I will send out a general notification after the first report is available on the TCCC web page.
On-line Publications
We are still planning the addition of on-line publications of white papers, conference papers, and submissions by TCCC members. I will send out a general notification when the ExCom has finalized plans for TCCC web page publications.
Vitality Screening
The TCCC has recently completed a Computer Society vitality screening. The Computer Society found the TCCC to be a vibrant TC and continues to fund TCCC activities. The vitality report is pasted below for your review.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the ExCom members if you have any questions or concerns
regarding TCCC activities. In particular, we would love to have your feedback
on what you would like to see in the online publications area, ranging from
tutorial-style articles on emerging technical areas by experts to original
research articles to reports on ongoing TCCC-related activities in different
IEEE regions. Your feedback will enable us to serve our common interests in a
more productive way.
Thank you,
Joe Bumblis
