YEAR END REPORT (for the previous year) 1998

Please answer the following questions by identifying the activities the TC conducted that benefited Computer Society members. Please differentiate between on-going and new projects.

Start date of your term as TC Chair: 11/30/97

End date of your term as TC Chair: 12/31/99

Communication with Members

Does your TC publish a newsletter? If so, what is the format (web, email, mail) and how often is it distributed?

No newsletter (yet)

Does your TC have a Web presence? If so, please include your URL and contact information for the Webmaster.  When was the last time the Web page was updated?

We have a small site hosted by IEEE-CS.

 http://computer.org/tab/TCI/

Webmaster Chapin is listed above.  He has updated it recently

but the IEEE-CS has not released these changes in

months!  Thus the site is very dated.

Does your TC use any other type of correspondence to communicate with members?

Email lists.  tci-{announce,discuss,exec}@computer.org

Formerly at research.att.com, and may move there

again, because the listserver is ATROCIOUS.  I

have been promised a new list server at CS for

many months and eagerly await it.  The existing

one drops messages on the floor, or fails to respond

to incoming mail for many days at which point it bounces.

TC Meetings

How many TC meetings did your TC have this year, and over what venue (at conferences, teleconferences, video-conferences, etc.)?

No face-to-face meetings or teleconfs, just email,

except for the SAINT steering committee meeting

in conjunction with the 11/98 TAB meeting in LA.

Conferences

How many conferences did your TC sponsor, co-sponsor, or cooperate with this year?

(please enter a numerical response such as 5)

0

Were there any new conferences or were any existing conferences discontinued?

Started various conferences for 1999.

Was your TC actively involved on any program committees, technical committees or steering committees of these conferences?

For 1999, yes.  Douglis is on the steering

committee for WIAPP, WMCSA, ASA/MA, SAINT.  He

is program chair for USENIX USITS, which we

cosponsor.

What was the most successful conference and least successful?

N/A

Publications

Did your TC sponsor any publications or host any special issues of a Computer Society magazine?

No.  We did provide a column in the 11/98 TAF

of Computer magazine.  And Douglis is now

on the editorial board of IEEE Internet Computing

Collaborative Efforts

Was your TC involved in any collaboration with other TCs, IEEE, groups, organizations, or initiatives?

We cosponsored events with TCOS, Comsoc, USENIX

going forward in 1999.

Volunteers

Estimate how many active volunteers were involved with your TC  this year.

15

What mechanisms did you use for recruiting and training new volunteers?

Email.

What was your volunteer turnover rate: (e.g., out of 15 key volunteers, half changed during the this year):

Too new to say.

Do you have scheduled election and appointment dates for revolving the volunteer leadership?

Not officially, but I plan to hold an election for

chair in the fall of 1999.  The new chair can

adjust appointments accordingly.

Awards

Did your TC present any awards to its volunteers?

No.

Does your TC sponsor regular awards or student scholarships at particular conferences or meetings every year? If so, please specify those awards or scholarships, and the meetings where they are offered.

Starting in 1999, we are funding student

awards and travel at our conferences.

TC Reviews

Has your TC participated in a formal or informal review by TAB? If so, please give approximate date of review.

We underwent approval to go from TF to TC status

in 11/98.

Concerns

Describe problems or frustrations encountered as TC Chair.

IEEE-CS web hosting and email services are unacceptable.

Staff Assistance

What services did you request of Computer Society staff?

Support in organizing SAINT, the new IPSJ/IEEE

Symp. on Applications and the Internet.  Anne Marie

has been exceedingly helpful, but we have had

great trouble finding a general chair, until 6/99.  Problem

now solved.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FUTURE PLANS (for the coming year)

Please answer the following questions by identifying the activities the TC shall conduct that will benefit Computer Society members. Please differentiate between on-going and new projects.

Communication with Members

How will your TC communicate with its members in the coming year, i.e., through newsletters, special correspondence from the chair or other officers, Web page, email, etc.

Web page, email. Newsletter as part of web page

if we can get a webmaster with time to organize it.

Conferences

How many conferences will your TC sponsor, co-sponsor, or cooperate with this year?

(please enter a numerical response such as 5)

4

Are there any new conferences or any existing conferences to be discontinued?

New: WIAPP, plus SAINT in 2001 currently underway

Will your TC be actively involved on any program committees, technical committees or steering committees of these conferences?

See above.

Publications

Will your TC sponsor any publications or host any special issues of a Computer Society magazine?

Not planned.

Collaborative Efforts

Will your TC be involved in any collaboration with other TCs, IEEE, groups, organizations, or initiatives?

WMCSA - TCOS

SAINT - IPSJ

USITS - USENIX

What new activities, opportunities or directions do you see as providing further viability and member benefit to your TC?

SAINT will help here a lot.

TC Meetings

How many TC meetings are planned for this year and over what venue (at conferences, teleconferences, video-conferences, etc.)? Please provide the dates, times, and locations.

Email only.

Volunteers

What mechanisms will you use to recruit and retain members and volunteers?

Email.

Staff Assistance

What services would you like to receive from staff?

Better email and web hosting support.
