Services Computing:
Foundational Discipline of The Modern Services Industry

Services Computing has become a cross-discipline that covers the science and technology of bridging the gap between Business Services and IT Services. The underneath breaking technology suite includes Web services and service-oriented architecture (SOA), business consulting methodology and utilities, business process modeling, transformation and integration. This scope of Services Computing covers the whole lifecycle of services innovation research that includes business compoentization, services modeling, services creation, services realization, services annotation, services deployment, services discovery, services composition, services delivery, service-to-service collaboration, services montoring, services optimization, as well as services management. The goal of Services Computing is to enable IT services and computing technology to perform business services more efficiently and effectively.

In November 2003, IEEE Computer Society (CS) officially approved Technical Community for Services Computing. In May 2004, it has been renamed to Technical Steering Committee for Services Computing (TSC-SC). In November 2004, IEEE Computer Society approved the Technical Committee on Services Computing (TCSVC), which is a multi-disciplinary group whose purpose is to advance and coordinate work in the field of Services Computing carried out throughout the IEEE in scientific, engineering, standard, literary and educational areas.

The original TSC-SC was endorsed by the IEEE Computer Society SP-5 (Strategic Planning) Committee for transforming IEEE Computer Society to Service-centric Community-driven Society. The TCSVC seeks scientists, educators, industry people, policy makers, decision makers, and others who have some insight and vision and understanding of the big challenges in service computing technologies and applications. In particular, the TCSVC aims to convene a diverse group from a variety of fields and at all career stages. The insight and vision would shape the research agenda in services computing over the next few decades.

The IEEE TCSVC sponsors professional meetings, publishes newsletter and/or bulletin, edits magazines/journals, provides guidance to the IEEE matters of importance of the community, as well as help co-ordinate academic, funding agency, and industry activities in the above areas. The TCSVC organizes annual conferences and a number of workshops with other organizations that would span the range of activities sponsored by the community. The current flagship conferences sponsored by TCSVC are the IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS), the IEEE International Conference on Services Computing (SCC), the International Conference on Cloud Computing (CLOUD), and the World Congress on Services (SERVICES). The TCSVC also sponsors the European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS) and the Asia Pacific Services Computing Conference (APSCC). All TCSVC activities will be made visible through IEEE Services Computing Community portal on the Web, electronic mail, journal editing network, international conferences and in newsgroup. In a long-term goal, the connection portal is not only used to connect between the members and TCSVC but also between the members and other relevant organizations.
